These actions are financed by European funds EAFRD, the Community and the Ministry of Agriculture
The Community of Irrigators of Pliego will manage to improve the transport, the distribution and the storage of the water thanks to the works of improvement and modernization of the irrigations that is carrying out the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing.
More than 1,400 community members belong to this community, which houses 777 hectares of land divided into two sections, Huerta Alta and Huerta Baja.
In these lands, crops of almond, olive, apricot and citrus predominate.
The works include 17 actions that are being executed simultaneously in the two sectors, they will replace the current system of surface irrigation with one located drip;
they will include an irrigation automation system, which will allow the management of the same through a device with internet;
and, the implementation of renewable energies will be carried out.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, stressed in his visit to Pliego that of the two sections "have already undertaken about 50 percent of the works and both will be ready by the end of the year . "
He also noted that these actions are part of the Rural Development Program of the Region of Murcia 2014-2020, and are financed by 63 percent by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), by 25.90 percent by the Autonomous Community and by 11.10 percent by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment.
The Irrigation Community has water resources from the Las Anguilas well, the Tajo-Segura water transfer and reclaimed water from the Pliego Residual Water Station.
The total volume available for irrigators is 3,629,359 cubic meters, which entails an average allocation of 4,671 cubic meters per hectare per year.
The works of sector I Huerta Alta cover 351 hectares and have a budget allocation of 3 million euros.
Among the actions that are carried out, the improvement of the individual irrigation systems and an extension of the existing irrigation network stand out.
In addition, agroclimatic stations will be implemented that will favor the decision making of farmers, the efficient use of water and the reduction of the water footprint.
Also, a balsa cover will be made to reduce evaporation.
In sector II Huerta Baja, which has 426 hectares and a budget of 5.8 million euros, a balsa conditioning project is being carried out.
In addition, a general pipeline with a length of 3911 meters and a filtering station is being developed, an installation of 1,773 photovoltaic panels in the Anguilas well pond and the covering of the regulation pond in order to reduce the loss of water by evaporation In its whole.
De Amor recalled that the Region already has 85 percent of its modernized irrigable area and reuses 98 percent of the water.
In addition, he stressed that "the new Water Pact reiterates the commitment of the Region to advance in the reuse of water and the improvement of existing facilities."
