The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment is working so that in 2017 the Sima de la Higuera, located in the municipality of Pliego, be declared a Natural Monument.
This was announced today by the counselor Adela Martinez-Cachá in a meeting with the mayor of Pliego, Ramona Jimenez.
"The singularity of the processes that have shaped the Sima de la Higuera, as well as the rarity of its morphology and the beauty of this geological formation, comply with the requirements described in the definition of Natural Monument, which is more than justified the proposal For his declaration, "said Martínez-Cachá.
It is the longest cavity in the Region, with 5,500 meters of distance, and has been reviewed in numerous publications and exhibitions during the last years.
His interest has attracted a significant number of national and international visitors and has required regulating its use and constituting a committee of experts for its management.
It is estimated that this type of karst systems represent between 5-10 percent of the caves on a global scale and the sima de la Higuera is a unique example in Spain.
In addition, it has a very unique and rare morphology, with some formations and geological structures, like the double cones (Room of the Paradise) unique at world-wide level.
The entrance to the Sima de la Higuera is located in Monte de 'Cabezo and Cuesta de Aledo', which stands at 485 meters above sea level and is crowned by a large fig tree, to which it owes its name.
The final delimitation for its proposal as Natural Monument, comprises 22.71 hectares.
It should be noted that with the Sima de la Higuera, the Region of Murcia will have the second Natural Monument, since last March 2016, Monte Arabí de Yecla coined the declaration by the Governing Council due to its uniqueness, Beauty and rarity of natural elements and geological formations.
